Aaron Glenn returns to Detroit with Jets defense facing Jared Goff
The former Lions coordinator brings New York's early top-ranked defense to Ford Field, where Dan Campbell's offense has scored 31 points in each of two games.

Aaron Glenn's return to Ford Field on Sunday is more than a reunion with Dan Campbell. The former Lions defensive coordinator now coaches a Jets team whose defense ranks first in the NFL through two games, according to New York's Week 3 briefing. Detroit, meanwhile, has scored 31 points in each of its first two games. The matchup puts the defensive identity Glenn helped build against the offense he knows from four seasons on Campbell's staff.
Glenn worked as Detroit's defensive coordinator from 2021 through 2024. He is now in his second season as Jets head coach. His familiarity can help New York recognize personnel and tendencies, but it cannot freeze a playbook in place. Detroit's official opponent report quotes Glenn acknowledging that both systems have changed since he left. The Lions' own Friday notebook says they want to start faster after two 31-point performances.
This makes the story on the field less about whether either coach can surprise an old friend and more about whether Detroit can keep its offense on schedule against a defense that has allowed little through two weeks. Jared Goff leads the league with six touchdown passes, the Jets report says. Campbell's team arrives 1-1 after allowing Buffalo 41 points in Week 2, while the Jets are also 1-1. The NFL's September 26 feature on the coaching friendship gives the relationship its history; it does not decide the matchup.

New York's availability picture complicates that defensive test. The Jets ruled out tight end Mason Taylor, safety Minkah Fitzpatrick and linebacker Kiko Mauigoa in Friday's briefing. Those absences affect both sides of the ball, and the final inactive list could change the available personnel again. Glenn addressed the challenge in his September 25 team press conference.
The game offers a specific answer to the familiar-coach debate: which side can adjust in real time once the early scripted looks are gone? Detroit needs cleaner openings; New York needs its defensive start to stand up to Goff and the Lions' scoring. Friendship explains why the meeting draws attention. The snaps will show whether that knowledge gives either staff a useful edge.
