Houston claimed the American League West on the final day with a 9-0 win over the Athletics in Sacramento. Texas lost 6-4 at Minnesota, so the Astros finish 81-81 and the Rangers 80-82. MLB's official September 27 results mark both games final, and its standings show Houston first in the division with a clinch indicator. A .500 record was enough to secure a division title and postseason place.
The Astros did not need the Rangers to lose once they built their lead. Houston scored four times in the third inning against the Athletics. Yainer Díaz doubled home Yordan Alvarez, and Lucas Spence tripled in Díaz and Christian Walker after Jose Altuve's RBI groundout opened the scoring. Walker homered in the sixth, and Houston kept adding runs through the eighth. The official play-by-play records 12 Houston hits and no Athletics runs.
Texas had its own path into the postseason when the teams entered Game 162 tied. Instead, Minnesota took control early. Josh Bell drove in a first-inning run and hit a two-run homer in the third, while Danny Jansen also homered. The Rangers rallied with a Corey Seager two-run homer in the ninth, but the official game feed shows the Twins held on 6-4. Houston's win made the Texas result irrelevant to the division title; the Rangers' loss simply widened the final margin to one game.

The standings give the result an unusual shape. Houston did not finish above .500, yet it receives the rights of a division winner rather than having to chase a Wild Card. The Athletics finish 64-98 and Texas 80-82. The Astros' 81 wins were the most in a weak division, and their last two games against the Athletics supplied the separation they needed. Saturday's 13-2 win kept them level with Texas; Sunday's shutout ended the tie.
For RANT readers, the argument now moves from whether a club with an even record deserves a postseason spot to what it can do with one. The rules reward winning the division, and Houston did exactly that over 162 games. A 9-0 finish gives the Astros momentum, but it does not erase the uneven record they carry into October.
