Indianapolis is facing an extended absence for starting defensive end Arden Key. ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reported Tuesday that Key is expected to miss about three to four weeks with a hamstring injury suffered in Sunday’s win over Washington.
The report adds a timetable to head coach Shane Steichen’s Monday statement that Key would miss time. It remains a reported recovery estimate; the Colts have not announced a return date or an injured-reserve move for Key.
Fowler’s report puts the coming weeks into focus for Indianapolis’ defensive-line planning.

On Wednesday, October 7, the Colts added veteran defensive end Carl Lawson to their practice squad and released tight end Kenny Fletcher Jr. from that group. The team said Lawson has 32 career sacks across 90 games and appeared in one game for Baltimore last season. The signing supplies another option to develop in the rotation; it does not establish that Lawson is on the active game roster or that he will receive Key’s workload.
Key joined the Colts as a free agent in March after three seasons with Tennessee. The team’s game log credits him with eight tackles, a half-sack and a forced fumble through four games. He recorded two tackles in the 30–13 London victory before leaving with the hamstring problem.
His contribution has extended beyond that sack total. Colts Wire’s Paul Bretl reported that Key generated 10 quarterback pressures in the first three games, second-most on the team during that span. The absence therefore removes a regular source of pressure from a rotation that is already missing Micheal Clemons, who is on injured reserve.
Joel Erickson’s reporting for the Indianapolis Star described Key as a starter who had been asked to handle more snaps than originally envisioned. Losing him now increases the demands on the remaining edge defenders, though the team has not announced a new starting assignment or promised a particular workload.
Colts Wire identified rookies Caden Curry and George Gumbs as players who could have larger roles. Those are possible responses to the injury, rather than confirmed promotions. The next practice reports and game-day rotation will show how Indianapolis intends to divide the available snaps.
For RSO managers, the immediate change is Key’s availability. The reported three-to-four-week estimate supports planning for several games without him, while any decision to use injured reserve would be a separate roster transaction. A replacement’s fantasy value depends on the role he actually receives; Key’s injury alone does not establish that another defender will inherit all of his production.
