BYU rules out Martin and Glasker for Iowa State

The Tuesday availability report confirms two absences after injuries at TCU, putting more work on BYU’s remaining running backs.

  • BYU will face Iowa State without running back LJ Martin and linebacker Isaiah Glasker, who are listed as out on the Big 12’s Tuesday availability report. Both players left the October 3 win at TCU with injuries and did not return.

The designation is firmer than Kalani Sitake’s initial assessment. On Monday, the BYU coach described both players as probably doubtful while evaluations continued. Mitch Harper reported that earlier update in the post below; Tuesday’s report subsequently ruled them out for Friday.

  • Craig Meyer of the Des Moines Register reports that BYU has three players ruled out, including running back Sione Moa. Martin leads the Cougars with 344 rushing yards and three rushing touchdowns after gaining 1,305 yards last season. With Moa already unavailable, the offense must draw further down its running back group.

  • Casey Lundquist of BYU on SI reports that Preston Rex is at the top of the remaining depth chart. Rex has 94 rushing yards on 18 carries this season. Lundquist also identifies freshman Journee Tonga as an option after his 14-yard run on BYU’s final drive against TCU.

Offensive coordinator Aaron Roderick said Tuesday that BYU intends to continue using the same offense despite losing its leading runner. Lundquist’s report also quotes Roderick saying the Cougars will probably get freshman Devaughn Eka into the game. That is an anticipated opportunity, rather than a promised number of carries or a confirmed division of work.

The availability report contains other unsettled BYU statuses. Safety Raider Damuni is doubtful and cornerback Cannon DeVries is probable. Iowa State lists safety Drew Surges, defensive end Caden Crawford and defensive tackle Ka’Mori Moore as out, with linebacker Rylan Barnes and tight end Christian Greenlaw questionable.

  • Friday’s game at LaVell Edwards Stadium begins at 10:15 p.m. Eastern on ESPN. The report settles Martin and Glasker’s availability for Iowa State, but it does not establish when either will return. Any involvement against Notre Dame the following week will require a later update.
