  • Thomas Castellanos sat out Texas Tech’s October 3 game at Colorado after an appeals court dissolved the injunction that had allowed him to play. Two weeks later, another court order has reopened the door.

On3 reported Friday that Castellanos and Louisville guard Seth Trimble are immediately eligible under a new temporary injunction in their fifth-year eligibility lawsuit.

  • The Lubbock Avalanche-Journal’s Don Williams independently reported that Jefferson Circuit Court Judge Brian C. Edwards issued Friday’s order for 38 athlete plaintiffs after an evidentiary hearing. They can compete while the injunction remains in effect.

  • The change has a specific football consequence. Castellanos gives Texas Tech another quarterback option behind Will Hammond, particularly in the short-yardage and red-zone packages the Red Raiders used in their first four games. Williams reported that Castellanos kept practicing while he was unable to play.

His current Texas Tech roster profile identifies him as a fifth-year quarterback who joined from Florida State during preseason camp. Trimble, meanwhile, is on Louisville’s roster after four seasons at North Carolina. He joined the Cardinals in August.

The reversal in their availability follows the October 2 appeals ruling that removed the earlier protection. Friday’s injunction gives the plaintiffs temporary relief; it does not establish eligibility for every athlete affected by the NCAA’s five-season transition.
