The Eagles are signing Joe Milton III off the Cowboys’ practice squad, adding another quarterback while Jalen Hurts is sidelined with a blood clot. Dallas confirmed the move in a team report Friday after Ian Rapoport and Adam Schefter reported the signing.
Tanner McKee is expected to start against Carolina on Sunday. Milton joins a quarterback group that also includes rookie Cole Payton; the signing does not establish a new starter.
For Dallas, the move removes the quarterback it kept on the practice squad after Sam Howell won the backup job behind Dak Prescott. Milton competed with Howell through training camp and the preseason before the Cowboys waived him at the August roster cutdown, then brought him back after he cleared waivers.

The roster requirement also reaches into the teams’ next meeting. Dallas’ report says Milton must spend at least three games on Philadelphia’s active 53-man roster after being signed from the practice squad. The Eagles and Cowboys are scheduled to meet October 26.
Milton, 26, arrived in Dallas in a 2025 trade with New England, which selected him in the sixth round in 2024. In five NFL appearances, he has completed 37 of 53 passes for 424 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions, according to Myles Simmons’ report for NBC Sports. He has also rushed for 66 yards and a touchdown.
