The NCAA's newer five-years-in-five framework is designed to simplify the clock, but its broader start comes next season. The current year remains a bridge between older exceptions, transfer rules and court challenges that were not written to fit one clean chart.

For coaches, the problem is operational. A player can practice, earn a role and still have his availability turn on a legal ruling. For athletes, one season can carry career value that no later remedy restores. College football begins with depth charts, but eligibility may be the most consequential line on them.
