Friday night gives college football three different tests of ranked-team depth

  • Friday night's college football slate puts three ranked teams in different kinds of danger. No. 5 Miami visits Wake Forest at 7:30 p.m. Eastern, No. 22 Houston visits No. 13 Texas Tech at 8 p.m., and No. 21 Oregon hosts Portland State at 10:30 p.m.

Miami-Wake Forest is the cleanest conference test. Miami has the ranking, but a road game against an ACC opponent asks whether the Hurricanes can handle a night when the opponent controls the tempo and the crowd. Wake Forest does not need a national win to make the game relevant; it needs to keep Miami from turning the first quarter into a ranking exercise.

Houston-Texas Tech is the night’s direct ranked-versus-ranked argument. Texas Tech owns the home field and the higher ranking, while Houston can change the Big 12 conversation with a road result. That game is the one to watch for the most immediate conference consequence.

  • Oregon's late kickoff is a different assignment. Portland State is not ranked, so Oregon's job is to avoid a slow start and finish cleanly before the weekend's bigger games take over. The Ducks are ranked No. 21 and play at home, which leaves little room for an unfocused first half.

The NCAA schedule supplies the rankings, times and network listings. The night is useful because the three games demand different answers: Miami must travel, Houston must challenge a higher-ranked home team, and Oregon must show discipline against an overmatched opponent.
