Guardian Cap debate puts NFL safety claims under scrutiny

Nowinski and the league differ over what a study of preseason practice concussions can establish.

  • Chris Nowinski's latest criticism of Guardian Caps puts the NFL's safety messaging under scrutiny: how much can the league credit a helmet cover for a decline in concussions?

The brain injury researcher raised that question in a Tuesday Pablo Torre Finds Out interview. The show's original October 6 X post carries his criticism, and Pro Football Talk returned to the dispute early Wednesday.

  • There is a specific research finding behind the argument. A 2025 American Journal of Sports Medicine study examined NFL preseason practices before and after designated positions were required to wear Guardian Cap NXT covers. The abstract reports an association with lower overall concussion rates, while a helmet-shell-impact subset showed no statistically significant association. Its conclusion says the overall decline cannot be assigned solely to the padding's energy-absorbing effects.

  • Both parts matter. The overall association should not disappear from an account of the study, and the narrower finding should not be turned into proof that every helmet cover is ineffective. The researchers studied practice conditions, with limits on what those results can explain elsewhere.

The NFL and Nowinski interpret the evidence differently. Jeff Eisenberg's September 22 Yahoo Sports investigation included a response from league health and safety executive Jeff Miller, who defended giving the caps at least some credit for the decline. Nowinski argued that the public could mistake the equipment for stronger protection than the evidence establishes. That older investigation supplies context for this week's interview.

  • The published study's disclosures also identify NFL-related funding and affiliations.

  • The NFL’s current equipment guidance gives players at positions requiring Guardian Caps in practice an exemption if they use one of ten designated helmets. Its helmet testing page also cautions against applying NFL laboratory results to college, high school or youth football.
