  • Miami and Toronto’s new stars draw attention, but their supporting casts have plenty to establish when the teams open preseason Saturday. Nick Richards is trying to secure a Heat roster place, while Toronto needs scoring growth from its young players. The Québec City game starts at 7 p.m. ET on NBA TV.

Richards is an immediate example of the work Miami still has to do around its headline additions. Zachary Weinberger reported Saturday for ClutchPoints that the center joined the Heat on a one-year, non-guaranteed deal. Richards told Weinberger that practicing against Giannis Antetokounmpo, Bam Adebayo and Bobby Portis, and asking about their preparation, was helping him improve.

Adebayo’s assessment focused on the possessions Richards can create: rebounding, running the floor and finishing above the rim. The praise came after Friday’s practice, in Weinberger’s interview below. That gives Richards a specific preseason task: turn those training-camp contributions into useful game minutes while pursuing a place on the opening-night roster.

  • Toronto’s evaluation has a different emphasis. In his Saturday preview, Raptors Republic’s Louis Zatzman identified scoring development among Jamal Shead, Ja’Kobe Walter, Collin Murray-Boyles and Allen Graves as a central preseason question. Their defensive promise gives Toronto options; creating and finishing possessions will help determine how those options fit together.

Immanuel Quickley supplied a more concrete offensive priority in Michael Grange’s Friday Sportsnet report. He said he wanted to create more pressure in the paint and be ready to shoot when playing off the ball. The Raptors’ search for more perimeter attempts makes those decisions worth following as preseason begins.

  • Kawhi Leonard’s workload remains a separate consideration. Grange reported that he had participated in camp while being held out of its live, contact portions as he built up from individual offseason work.

For both teams, the opener offers an early look at how the supporting players handle those assignments against another opponent. Richards’ activity around the basket, Toronto’s young creators and Quickley’s shooting decisions provide useful measures even while the larger rotations are still taking shape.
