Messick’s homecoming meets Peralta’s rebound in ALCS Game 2

Cleveland takes a 1-0 lead into Tuesday’s matchup at Tropicana Field, with both starters facing pressure to deliver innings.

  • Parker Messick returns to the ballpark he visited as a child with a chance to put Cleveland two wins ahead in the American League Championship Series. The Guardians' rookie left-hander will face Freddy Peralta and the Rays in Game 2 at Tropicana Field on Tuesday, with first pitch scheduled for 8 p.m. Eastern.

Cleveland leads the best-of-seven series 1-0 after Monday's 7-3 comeback win. Messick's assignment makes this a different test from the opener: the Guardians want a longer start after leaning on five relievers, while Tampa Bay needs Peralta to halt Cleveland's late-inning production.

MLB's Tim Stebbins reported that Messick grew up in Plant City and attended the Rays' 2008 World Series Game 2 at age seven. Family and friends will be back at Tropicana Field for his start, and Plant City is organizing a watch party.

  • Messick has already pitched well on two trips to face Tampa Bay in Florida. Stebbins reported one run allowed over six innings at George M. Steinbrenner Field in September 2025, followed by one run over 7 2/3 innings at Tropicana Field on July 26 this season.

His most recent postseason start was shorter. Against the White Sox in ALDS Game 4, he threw 65 pitches in 2 1/3 innings and allowed two runs, with four walks. He is on normal rest for Tuesday.

The workload adds context to that assignment. Stebbins reported 193 innings for Messick across the regular season and playoffs, beyond his previous professional high of 138 1/3 in 2025. Messick said he felt good physically while acknowledging the demands of October.

  • Cleveland published its ALCS roster before the opener. That roster carries into the longer series, with Messick part of the pitching group available to manager Stephen Vogt.

  • Peralta arrives after a strong finish to the regular season. Field Level Media reported a 5-0 record and 0.79 ERA over his final six regular-season starts, then one run allowed in 4 2/3 innings against the Yankees on October 5.

The Rays also received encouraging news on Junior Caminero after his collision with left fielder Jonny DeLuca late in Game 1. He stayed in the game, and manager Kevin Cash said afterward that he appeared fine. That statement does not establish Tuesday's starting lineup, which remained unconfirmed for this preview.

The immediate stakes are straightforward: a Cleveland win would make the series 2-0 before it moves north, while Tampa Bay can send the teams to Game 3 even. TBS, truTV, UniMas and HBO Max are listed by MLB for the 8 p.m. broadcast.
