Miami keeps Willis as starter while McCord and Cook handle bye-week throws

A light Tuesday session offered more work for the backups; the Dolphins have announced no new injury diagnosis or quarterback change.

  • Malik Willis did not throw during the portion of Tuesday’s light Dolphins practice open to reporters, according to South Florida Sun Sentinel reporter David Furones. Kyle McCord and Brady Cook handled the throws while Willis took snaps and made handoffs.

The bye-week session largely gave repetitions to players with limited game work. Furones reported that Willis finished Sunday’s loss to Cincinnati without a known injury, and Miami is not issuing an injury report from Tuesday’s practice.

Cook’s return supplies another quarterback option. The Dolphins announced Tuesday that they had signed him to the practice squad and released running back Jarquez Hunter from that unit. Miami had cut Cook from its active roster over the weekend.

  • Jeff Hafley said Monday that Willis remains the starter, according to Furones. Miami is 0-5 after Sunday’s 31-24 loss to the Bengals, in which Willis threw two interceptions and lost a fumble. Tuesday’s observation came without an announced quarterback change or injury diagnosis.

Cook joined the Dolphins after an August waiver claim from the Jets. Miami’s announcement lists five appearances and four starts for him with New York in 2025, with 739 passing yards and two touchdowns.

The next regular injury report is due the following Wednesday as Miami prepares for its Oct. 25 game against the Jets. It should provide more information if Willis is receiving treatment for an injury.
