Nico Iamaleava spoke publicly for the first time Thursday since the injury that ended his season, and he made a promise.
"Well, I'm heartbroken the way my season ended. I've finally accepted that this year is really over for me," the UCLA quarterback wrote on Instagram. "This wasn't a part of the plan, but I believe everything happens for a reason. I gave this game and my brothers everything I had and I'll continue to lean on God and trust His plan. I'll be back."
He got hurt late in the first half of UCLA's win at Oregon on Oct. 11. Two defenders tackled him and his left leg appeared to twist, the Associated Press reported. He missed one play, came back, then did not come out for the second half. USA Today identified the tacklers as Bear Alexander and Jerry Mixon. Coach Bob Chesney confirmed the next week that Iamaleava was done for the year and expected to have surgery.

The awkward part for Iamaleava is that UCLA hasn't missed a beat. The Bruins are 7-0 and ranked seventh, and senior Ty Dieffenbach makes his third start Saturday at home against Nevada (3-4). Dieffenbach has thrown for 505 yards with two touchdowns and one interception, per the AP.
Iamaleava's numbers before the injury were ordinary: 982 passing yards, four touchdowns and four interceptions, plus 144 rushing yards and a score. The New York Post described it as a shaky start to his season. He has one year of eligibility left after transferring from Tennessee in April 2025, so "I'll be back" reads as a plan to play college football again in 2027.
The harder part is what comes next. If Dieffenbach keeps UCLA unbeaten into November, Iamaleava will spend the rest of the fall rehabbing while someone else runs an undefeated team, and nothing guarantees the 2027 job is his when he gets back.
