Sagapolutele remains in concussion protocol as Cal prepares for Virginia Tech

  • Cal quarterback Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele is in concussion protocol and remains day-to-day before Saturday’s home game against Virginia Tech, coach Tosh Lupoi told reporters Tuesday. The update follows Sagapolutele’s departure from the 39–31 loss at UNLV.

Kenzo Fukuda of the San Francisco Chronicle reported that Lupoi held the quarterback out after halftime, despite being told he could return. That earlier assessment does not settle his availability this week. Fukuda’s dated post identifies the current protocol status and the coach’s explanation.

  • The uncertainty gives Virginia Tech two quarterbacks to prepare for. The Hokies’ official matchup preview identifies redshirt junior Jackson Brousseau as the player who replaced Sagapolutele at UNLV. Brousseau threw for 200 yards and two touchdowns in that appearance after starting eight games for Colorado State in 2025.

  • Sagapolutele has remained an important part of Cal’s offense in his second season. Virginia Tech’s preview credits him with 1,180 passing yards and eight touchdowns through five games. Bryan Manning of Gobbler Country reports that he has completed 65 percent of his throws, with five interceptions. Losing that experience for Saturday would leave Brousseau facing a conference opponent in place of the regular starter.

The game also arrives during a change in Cal’s offensive play-calling. Manning reports that Lupoi handed those duties from offensive coordinator Jordan Somerville to pass game coordinator Pat McCann during the UNLV game. The quarterback’s medical status and the offense’s play-calling change are separate developments; neither establishes who will start against the Hokies.

Virginia Tech enters 4–1 overall and 1–1 in the ACC after losing 35–33 to Pitt. Cal is 2–3 and also 1–1 in conference play. The Hokies’ official preview highlights Ethan Grunkemeyer’s 1,446 passing yards and 11 touchdowns, making the Bears’ preparations a challenge on defense as well as at quarterback.

  • Saturday’s game begins at 3:30 p.m. Eastern on ACC Network. Cal’s next availability update will be needed to establish whether Sagapolutele can play or Brousseau will take the starting assignment.
