SEC asks a court for power to expel LSU and tees up a Thursday presidents vote

The SEC just turned the LSU eligibility fight into an expulsion-authority filing.
On Tuesday, September 8, 2026, the conference amended its federal lawsuit against LSU, Lane Kiffin, and school officials to seek the legal right to expel LSU. The filing says presidents and chancellors meet Thursday, September 10, under Section 3.1.5. Two-thirds of the presidents can terminate membership.
ESPN reports the SEC is not expected to follow through on expulsion. The point of the amendment is to lock down the conference's ability to police its own rules after a Louisiana state judge blocked penalties tied to athletes who signed NFL contracts and tried to come back.

The complaint leans on spectacle tape: Kiffin telling ABC at halftime of LSU's 51-10 win over Clemson, "Imagine if we had pro players," about Wright and Harris. The SEC says that stands against silence from LSU's president and athletic director and shows a lack of institutional control. Louisiana Attorney General Elizabeth Murrill was added as a defendant. The league wants a TRO so LSU and its lawyers cannot block Thursday's meeting.
