Louisville survived two late Syracuse possessions after a 669-yard first half.

  • Syracuse gained 462 yards Saturday and still could not find the eight points it needed at the end. Louisville stopped the Orange on fourth down on their final two possessions, closing a 34-26 game in which Syracuse's first-half scoring gave way to a second-half struggle.

The loss dropped Syracuse to 2-4 overall and 0-4 in the ACC. The Orange have lost 11 consecutive conference games. Louisville improved to 4-3 and 3-2, winning on the road for the first time this season.

Syracuse quarterback Malachi Nelson threw for 315 yards and two touchdowns, and Umari Hatcher caught 13 passes for a career-high 224 yards. Ahmad Miller rushed for 123 yards. Those performances kept the Orange close, but their three-of-14 third-down conversion rate made finishing drives much harder after halftime.

Syracuse trailed 28-23 at halftime after Lincoln Kienholz's 46-yard touchdown pass to Isaac Brown with 28 seconds remaining. The score capped a first half in which the teams combined for 669 yards.

The third quarter passed without a point. Shay Barker's 24-yard field goal with 12:45 left in the fourth pulled Syracuse within 28-26, and Louisville's offense had offered little since halftime. The Cardinals finished the second half with just 58 total yards.

  • Cam White's interception changed that situation. Louisville converted the takeaway into a five-play, 56-yard drive, ending with Keyjuan Brown's five-yard touchdown run with 7:34 remaining. A missed extra point left Syracuse one touchdown and a two-point conversion from a tie.

The Orange reached fourth down on each of their last two possessions. Louisville stopped the first with 3:04 left. After a Cardinals punt, Syracuse had another opportunity, but its last drive ended on downs with 45 seconds remaining.

Explosive plays build a lead the defense saves

Kienholz passed for 310 yards and one touchdown and ran for two more scores. An 82-yard quarterback run put Louisville ahead 14-10 late in the first quarter; his one-yard touchdown run restored its lead in the second.

Keyjuan Brown scored twice from five yards out and finished with 50 rushing yards. Louisville found those points despite holding a smaller share of the total offense: Syracuse outgained the Cardinals 462-425.

The Cardinals made up for that gap with disruptive defense. They recorded five sacks and 11 tackles for loss, while Kaleb Beasley and White intercepted Nelson in the second half. Louisville's offense had carried much of the first half. Its defense finished the job, leaving Syracuse with another conference loss despite its productive passing game.
