The Golden State Warriors had the Memphis Grizzlies beat on Friday night. They led 106-94 after De'Anthony Melton's 3-pointer with 3:47 left at Chase Center. Then they missed their last nine shots, never made another field goal, and lost 111-108.
Memphis scored the final 17 points. Ty Jerome's 3-pointer with 1:24 left made it 106-105. Zach Edey blocked a Stephen Curry 3, and Jaylen Wells tied it with a free throw. Curry and Brandin Podziemski each missed 3-pointers on the next trips, and rookie Cameron Boozer hit the go-ahead jumper with 20 seconds left.
That is the second straight loss to open the season for Golden State, after a 127-105 defeat at the Lakers on opening night. The Warriors won the free-throw battle, going 26 for 29, and they made 14 3-pointers. They still shot 34 of 83 from the field and scored only 32 points in the paint against a Memphis front line built around the 7-foot-4 Edey. Golden State had three fast-break points.

Curry scored 24 but went 5 for 15. Podziemski had 18 on 7-of-17 shooting. Draymond Green had five points, six assists and five turnovers in 31 minutes.
Then there is the rookie. Yaxel Lendeborg, the 11th pick, had 18 points, 13 rebounds and six assists in his home debut, which is a real line. He also drew a double technical with Jerome early in the third quarter, his second technical in two career games. This is the same rookie who said after the opener that he "lost all respect" for Luka Doncic and called him out for complaining, according to the Associated Press. Coach Steve Kerr said he wants Lendeborg to run the floor better.
Green and Isaiah Stewart drew their own double technicals before halftime, so the Warriors had plenty of edge. What they did not have was a basket over the last three and a half minutes.
Memphis is 2-0, and Jerome has followed his 45-point opener with 28. Golden State visits Phoenix on Saturday, the second night of a back-to-back.
