Florida goes back to Aaron Philo, and he is benched after seven throws against Georgia

Jon Sumrall chose Philo over Tramell Jones Jr., who had won his first start at Texas. Philo threw two interceptions on seven passes, and Florida lost 27-8 to No. 3 Georgia.

  • Florida made a quarterback call this week, and it lasted seven passes. Aaron Philo started against No. 3 Georgia on Saturday in Atlanta, completed 5 of 7 for 26 yards, threw two interceptions and was replaced by Tramell Jones Jr. Georgia won 27-8, its sixth straight win over the Gators.

  • ESPN reported Friday that first-year coach Jon Sumrall would go back to Philo after a right shoulder injury kept him out of the 27-24 win at Texas. That was a defensible choice on paper. Philo came in completing 70.5% of his passes with nine touchdowns and three interceptions. Jones had made one start, the Texas win, where he threw for 155 yards and two touchdowns.

Ellis Robinson IV intercepted an underhanded throw Philo made under pressure, according to the AP recap on ESPN. The second pick was high, went through Eric Singleton Jr.'s hands and landed with Demello Jones. That was the end of Philo's day.

  • Jones did not fix it either. He went 18 of 25 for 172 yards, which looks fine, but his fumble on a Quintavius Johnson sack with 29 seconds left in the half was returned 66 yards for a Chris Cole touchdown and a 24-0 Georgia lead. In the third quarter he drove Florida to the Georgia 3 and threw an end-zone interception to Braylon Conley.

Four turnovers, five first-half penalties for 60 yards and 48 rushing yards will lose to anybody. Jadan Baugh came in leading the SEC with 13 rushing touchdowns and finished with 38 yards on 17 carries. Georgia ran for 217.

Sumrall's line all week was "I think we can win with either guy." On Saturday Florida lost with both, and now he has to pick again with Oklahoma coming to Gainesville. Jones has the Texas win and the cleaner afternoon. Philo has the season numbers and a shoulder that just produced two interceptions in seven throws. If Sumrall goes back to Philo again, he needs a better answer than the one he gave this week.

  • Florida falls to 5-3 (3-3 SEC) and may drop out of the Top 25 after beating No. 7 Texas two weeks ago. Georgia is 7-1 and visits No. 12 Ole Miss next.
