  1. Kevin Love opened his Tribeca apartment to Architectural Digest in December 2020, and the best seat in the house might be in the kitchen. In the tour, he explains that opening a sight line to the trees, water and city was a major part of the renovation. A custom bench gives him somewhere to sit and enjoy it. Model Kate Bock joins him at the end of the official walkthrough.

That bench would be our first request. Imagine moving the first coffee of the day away from your inbox and toward a window. You could still get through your messages; you might simply take your time doing it. A good seat can turn an otherwise forgettable part of the morning into something you look forward to.

The accompanying AD gallery shows reclaimed oak flooring, exposed beams and a corner devoted to vinyl. The combination makes a persuasive case for putting a record on and staying home. Wood and music are an appealing answer to the question of what you want an apartment to feel like once the visitors leave.

Watch for the places you'd actually use. A listening corner gets our evening vote, but the window bench wins the morning. Given one upgrade for your own home, would you choose the sound system or the seat with a view?
