The Los Angeles Lakers assigned rookie guard Cameron Carr to the Coachella Valley Lakers on Thursday, Marc Stein reported and multiple outlets confirmed. The same update sent third-year guard Bronny James to the G League affiliate ahead of Friday's season opener in Palm Desert.
Carr was the No. 24 overall pick in the 2026 draft out of Baylor. He missed the start of the regular season with a right oblique strain from training camp, then debuted Nov. 1 and has logged about three and a half minutes across three NBA games, per Rookie Wire. In preseason he averaged 12 points, two steals, 1.5 rebounds and one assist while shooting 40 percent from three, including a 19-point debut against Sacramento on Oct. 5. Coach JJ Redick has praised his potential. The block has been opportunity behind Luka Doncic, Austin Reaves and a deep guard rotation.
Coachella Valley opens Friday at Acrisure Arena against the Salt Lake City Stars after the Lakers moved the affiliate to Palm Desert this season. James has played sparingly for the 7-2 Lakers this year and already has a G League body of work from the South Bay years. For Carr, the assignment is a minutes plan for a first-round pick who has barely seen the floor, matching the development path other 2026 rookies take when NBA snaps are scarce.

For prospect and fantasy trackers, this is a playing-time assignment. Watch Carr's minutes and usage Friday and through the first Coachella week, whether he starts, and how soon Los Angeles recalls him when the big club needs a body. The rising story is the No. 24 pick getting live reps after the oblique delay.
What to watch next: Friday's Coachella box score, any recall before the Lakers' next NBA game, and whether Carr sticks with the affiliate for a longer stretch while James shuttles.
