Rafael Devers' season is over, leaving the Giants without their central power threat for Sunday night's game against the Padres and turning the rest of his September toward treatment.

San Francisco placed its first baseman and designated hitter on the 60-day injured list with a core muscle injury Sunday. The club selected outfielder Scott Bandura's contract from Triple-A Sacramento to fill the roster opening.

The next development is expected early this week. NBC Sports Bay Area's Alex Pavlovic reported that manager Tony Vitello expects Devers to have surgery Tuesday. Vitello said the issue had bothered Devers intermittently for years and that the Giants had known for some time an operation would be needed.

That is an expectation, not confirmation that surgery has happened. The Giants' injury report says Devers will visit Dr. William Meyers in Philadelphia; Tuesday surgery remains conditional on that evaluation.

A productive season ends before the schedule does

The timing makes this more than an ordinary September day off. Devers had been playing through the issue while continuing to supply power, according to Pavlovic's reporting. His recent availability gave little indication that his season was about to end: NBC Sports Bay Area reported that he had missed only one game before Sunday.

The club had found ways to manage his workload. Devers received additional starts at designated hitter during the summer, with Bryce Eldridge playing first base. Wednesday's rest day was therefore part of a longer effort to keep him available, rather than the beginning of a brief absence that now has a confirmed end date.

Pavlovic reported that Vitello believed the club had taken that approach as far into the season as was reasonable. With the injured-list move now official, the Giants can stop managing his daily availability and plan the remaining lineup without him.

What changes against San Diego

Nick Pivetta and Logan Webb are Sunday's probable starters at 7:20 p.m. Eastern. Peacock and NBCSN carry Padres-Giants.

Bandura's promotion fills a roster spot; it does not make him a like-for-like replacement for Devers. He is an outfielder, while the departing hitter had divided his work between first base and DH. The Giants will have to distribute those plate appearances within the lineup as well as decide how to use their newly promoted outfielder.

For viewers, that makes the batting order one of the night's useful details to watch. The question is how San Francisco arranges its remaining hitters around Webb's start after losing a regular presence, rather than whether Devers can play through another game.

The immediate checkpoint comes after the Philadelphia evaluation. Until the Giants announce its outcome, the established facts are the season-ending roster move and the planned medical consultation. A completed operation, a rehabilitation schedule and a firm return date would each require a further update.
