Texas spent three quarters looking like the game had gotten away from it. Then the Longhorns scored 21 points in the fourth quarter and beat No. 1 Ohio State 24-23 in Austin.

Ohio State led 23-3 after its third-quarter field goal. Texas finally broke through when Arch Manning found Ryan Wingo for a touchdown, and the comeback gathered speed from there. Hollywood Smothers scored from a yard out with 25 seconds left to put Texas in front.

The Buckeyes still had one last chance. Connor Hawkins had made three field goals earlier, but his 45-yard attempt after Texas took the lead missed. That gave the Longhorns the opening they needed to finish the winning drive.

Manning threw for 195 yards and a touchdown. Smothers ran for 74 yards and the go-ahead score, while Texas finished with 336 total yards to Ohio State's 372. The Buckeyes converted 6 of 14 third downs; Texas went 9 of 16.

Texas moves to 2-0 after the biggest kind of early-season test: a comeback against the No. 1 team. Ohio State leaves at 1-1, with a 23-point lead that lasted almost the entire night except for the part that decided the game.
