The Clippers commit 24 more turnovers and lose to a Lakers team without Doncic

  • The LA Clippers turned the ball over 24 times on Wednesday night and lost 103-87 to a Los Angeles Lakers team playing without Luka Doncic. It was the Clippers' third straight loss, and they are 1-3.

That makes 76 turnovers in three games. The Clippers had 26 in each of their previous two games, losses to Oklahoma City and to the Lakers last Friday, according to the Associated Press. On Wednesday the Lakers turned those 24 giveaways into 31 points and finished with 15 steals, the ESPN box score shows.

The Lakers had every reason to look flat. Doncic, who leads the NBA at 36 points a game, sat with back tightness on the second night of a back-to-back, and starting forward Ziaire Williams sat with a sore left foot. Coach JJ Redick called both moves precautionary.

  • The Lakers won anyway, and it was not close for long. They took the second quarter 31-16, including 16 straight points, and led 56-38 at halftime. When the Clippers opened the third on a 12-2 run, Collin Sexton answered with 11 in a row, including back-to-back 3-pointers. The Lakers led 85-66 after three and were never threatened again.

  • Quentin Grimes led the Lakers with 23 points, four steals and 9-of-11 free throws. Sexton scored a season-high 21 off the bench, and six Lakers reached double figures.

The Clippers' bright spot was rookie Keaton Wagler, who scored a career-high 21 off the bench and hit a shot from beyond half court to end the third quarter. He also needed 15 shots to make four field goals. Darius Garland had 14 points and five turnovers, and Brook Lopez scored two points in 22 minutes. The team shot 35% from the field and lost the paint 48-28. Starting forward Rui Hachimura sat with left quad tightness.

  • The Lakers are 4-1 and have beaten the Clippers by eight and by 16 in the span of a week. The Clippers have to fix ball security fast, because their next game is Friday night at Minnesota to open NBA Cup group play. The Lakers start their Cup schedule the same night at Golden State.
