  • The Green Bay Packers lost 20-17 at Detroit on Sunday on Jake Bates' 22-yard field goal at the gun, and they did most of the work for him. Rookie kicker Trey Smack missed two field goals, and Karl Brooks drew two penalties on the winning drive. Green Bay (4-3) had its three-game winning streak snapped and dropped to last place in the NFC North, according to the Associated Press.

Smack missed from 26 yards in the first half, a kick shorter than an extra point. Those three points alone would have covered the final margin.

The bigger one came with the game tied 17-17 and under five minutes left. Detroit's Dan Campbell had just gone for it on fourth-and-1 from his own 24 and Jahmyr Gibbs was stuffed. Green Bay took that short field into the red zone. Jordan Love put a ball on Josh Jacobs' hands in the end zone and it fell incomplete. On the next play, D.J. Wonnum got a finger on Smack's 35-yard try and it missed.

  • Detroit took over and Jared Goff hit Sam LaPorta for 18 yards. Brooks was flagged for a late hit on Goff, putting the ball at the Green Bay 45. After a 15-yard Gibbs run, Brooks lined up offside on third-and-5, and the Lions had a first down at the Packers 15. Green Bay then stopped trying to tackle Gibbs so it could get the ball back, and Gibbs was smart enough to go down short of the goal line. Bates did the rest.

  • The Packers had eight penalties for 81 yards. They went 1 for 4 in the red zone. Love threw for 274 yards and two touchdowns, to Tucker Kraft and to Jacobs, but needed 45 attempts and threw an interception to Brian Branch. The run game produced 60 yards.

Jacobs at least looked like himself in his season debut, catching five passes for 55 yards and a touchdown less than a week after he came off the commissioner's exempt list. He ran 11 times for 36.

  • Detroit wasn't clean either. The Lions lost two fumbles after coming in with one turnover all season and failed on a fourth-and-5 from the Green Bay 6. Green Bay still couldn't make them pay, and it lost centers Sean Rhyan and Jacob Monk to injuries along the way.

The Packers host Carolina on Thursday night, with a short week to sort out the kicking.
