Before you start counting rooms, look at the light. The entrance to Sugar Ray Leonard's villa gives you something better to think about than square footage.

Architectural Digest's November 2021 tour visited the home with Leonard and Bernadette Robi. Its solarium featured steel-framed doors and antique columns imported from Italy. The couple discussed making the house comfortable for family, with architect Richard Landry among the credited designers. The solarium is the part I would save. An entrance can be a place where you hurry past your shoes, or it can persuade you to slow down for a moment. You do not need antique columns to understand the appeal of arriving somewhere bright and being able to look outside.

There is also a useful tension in a grand room that still needs to welcome people. Would you feel comfortable sitting down? Would you worry about moving a chair? Those questions tell you more about whether you want a space than an impressive list of finishes.
