Kyler Murray’s first regular-season start for Minnesota ended in the first quarter Sunday when the Vikings ruled him out with a concussion against Green Bay. Carson Wentz took over, turning a division opener into an immediate test of Minnesota’s quarterback depth.

The Vikings first announced that Murray was being evaluated, then confirmed he would not return. That announcement settles his availability for this game. It does not establish how long he will be sidelined beyond Sunday.

A scramble changes the opener

Murray was injured on a two-yard scramble with 6:16 remaining in the first quarter. The play-by-play recorded a 15-yard unnecessary-roughness penalty against Packers safety Javon Bullard, moving Minnesota from its own 35 to midfield.

In the team’s account, Murray took contact from Lukas Van Ness and Bullard as he went to the ground. Trainers attended to him on the field before he walked off under his own power. Wentz entered and helped complete the possession with a 38-yard Will Reichard field goal.

Murray finished his brief appearance with three completions on five attempts for 18 yards and an interception, plus nine rushing yards on two attempts. His first pass had been intercepted by Keisean Nixon, leaving Minnesota’s new starter little time to recover from an unsettled opening before the injury changed the afternoon.

Wentz gets the first call

Minnesota’s game-day arrangements explain why Wentz entered. J.J. McCarthy was designated the emergency third quarterback on the inactive list, dressed but available under the conditions the Vikings outlined if both Murray and Wentz were injured.

Local beat reporter Ben Goessling also confirmed Wentz’s replacement role and McCarthy’s emergency designation.

Wentz had already given the offense a scoring response by halftime. He connected with Justin Jefferson for a 39-yard touchdown with 1:55 left in the second quarter, bringing Minnesota back within nine points at the break.

The halftime box score had Wentz at six completions on 10 attempts for 79 yards and a touchdown. Green Bay led 19–10. Those are first-half figures, with the game continuing; Minnesota’s result remained undecided.

The next quarterback decision can wait

Murray won the starting job in August after competing with McCarthy through the offseason and training camp. Minnesota signed him to a one-year contract in March following seven seasons and 87 starts with Arizona. Sunday was supposed to begin the next stage of that move, with the offense finally operating in a regular-season game.

Instead, the immediate assignment belongs to Wentz: keep the offense moving against a division rival while the medical staff handles Murray’s evaluation and follow-up.

For fantasy managers, Wentz is the replacement to track from this game. McCarthy’s presence in uniform does not make him the next starter by default. Any Week 2 decision still needs a fresh team update; Sunday’s announcement supplied no return date and no promise about who starts next.
