Pat Murphy takes the World Series final-out ball from Jake Bauers and rips the 'horses---' Yankees

Video of the Brewers manager's message to his soon-to-be free agent went viral Thursday. Bauers, a former Yankee, caught the last out of Milwaukee's first title.

  • Pat Murphy won his first World Series on Wednesday night. He used one of his first moments with the final-out ball to take a shot at the New York Yankees.

Jake Bauers caught the last out of the Brewers' 4-1 Game 5 win over Tampa Bay, then walked the ball over to his manager during the celebration at Tropicana Field. Murphy hugged him. Then, on camera, he gave Bauers some free agency advice.

"You're going to be a rich f---er," Murphy told Bauers, according to ESPN. "Just remember when you were on that horses--- Yankees team and you guys were all playing for yourself? Just remember, say, 'This is the way we used to do it.'"

  • Bauers knows that clubhouse. He played 84 games for the Yankees in 2023 and hit .202 with 12 homers and 95 strikeouts before New York traded him to Milwaukee that November, ESPN noted. In Milwaukee he turned into a different hitter. He set career highs this season with a .266 average, 26 homers, 86 RBIs and an .874 OPS, and he was MVP of the NLCS sweep of the Dodgers. Now he is about to hit the open market.

Bauers told Sports Illustrated he thought about keeping the ball. He gave it up for a simple reason. "My first year here was Murph's first year," he said. "He is the one who brings everyone together. I wanted him to have it because no one is more important to us being such a team. He deserved it."

Crude as it was, Murphy was making a point about how this team won. Yahoo Sports read it as his case that every Brewer played for the team rather than for individual numbers, and SB Nation called the title a win for a small-market, lower-spending club. Yahoo also noted the Yankees could be shopping for a first baseman this winter, which would make Murphy's warning a little too on the nose.

  • Murphy is not the first champion to aim at New York. In 2024, Dodgers veterans Joe Kelly, Miguel Rojas and Chris Taylor called out the Yankees' play after beating them, with Kelly calling them "sloppy" and Rojas criticizing "lazy" defense. Reporters did not ask Murphy or Bauers about the exchange.
