Two plays later, Brissett found McBride for a 3-yard touchdown. The extra point made it 23-14 with 11:44 left. Wingard intercepted Herbert on the Chargers' next series, ending a drive that had reached the Los Angeles 40 and allowing the Cardinals to take nearly five more minutes off the clock.
Chad Ryland's 49-yard field goal with 2:33 remaining completed the scoring. Los Angeles failed on all three of its fourth-down attempts and finished with 268 yards, including 81 on the ground. Herbert was sacked three times and completed 17 of 27 passes for 209 yards, one touchdown and one interception.
Arizona had established its passing rhythm much earlier. McBride caught a 27-yard pass on the game's first play, and rookie Jeremiyah Love finished the opening 70-yard drive with a 5-yard touchdown run. Omarion Hampton answered with an 8-yard score to tie it, but the Chargers did not score again before halftime.
Ryland made field goals of 27 and 44 yards in the second quarter and added a 34-yarder in the third. Herbert's 8-yard touchdown pass to Ladd McConkey pulled Los Angeles within two points, setting up the special-teams sequence that gave Arizona room to pull away.
Kendrick Bourne caught all eight of his targets for 75 yards, while Michael Wilson added five catches for 56. Brissett distributed completions to six players, helping Arizona run 72 offensive plays and hold the ball for 37:31.
The backfield remained shared. Tyler Allgeier carried 17 times for 61 yards and caught two passes; Love finished with 11 carries for 41 yards and two catches for nine. Arizona Sports had reported before the opener that Allgeier remained ahead of Love on the Week 1 depth chart. The rookie supplied the first touchdown, while Allgeier handled more carries.
McConkey led the Chargers with five catches for 82 yards. David Njoku also caught five passes, totaling 58 yards, but Los Angeles converted only two of eight third downs and lost a Hampton fumble in addition to Herbert's interception.
Arizona's official postgame report said safety Kitan Crawford was carted to the locker room with an ankle injury and did not return. Cornerback Max Melton briefly left with an ankle injury before returning. No recovery timetable was established in that report.
