Memphis didn't wait long to beat a ranked team. Jayden Reid scored 26 points, 17 of them in the second half, and the Tigers knocked off No. 18 Iowa State 80-76 on Monday night at the Sanford Pentagon in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, per the AP recap on ESPN.
It was the season opener for both teams.
Reid took the last three minutes
Memphis led 69-62 with about five minutes left after a Rihards Vavers 3-pointer. Iowa State answered with a 7-0 run to tie it at 69, and Luke Almodovar, who had carried Memphis for much of the night, fouled out with just over three minutes to go.

That's when Reid took over. The Northwestern transfer scored 11 points in the final three minutes, including a 3-pointer with 38 seconds left that made it 78-73. He went 12 of 14 at the free-throw line, per the ESPN box score.
How Memphis won it
The Tigers made 9 of 20 threes. Iowa State made 4 of 20. Memphis also got to the line 33 times and made 25, and it led for 82% of the game in a matchup that had 12 lead changes. Almodovar's dunk at the halftime buzzer put Memphis up 40-39.
Iowa State's side
Ryan Prather Jr. led the Cyclones with 19 points. Dominykas Pleta scored 13 of his 15 in the final 10 minutes and went 7 of 8 from the floor in just 12 minutes. Tamin Lipsey had 12 but made only 4 of 13 shots and 1 of 7 from deep.
The RANT take
This is a bad loss for a team ranked 18th, and the reason is easy to see. Iowa State couldn't make a three, and Lipsey never found his shot. Memphis now has a ranked win in game one and a closer who looks like he wants the ball.
Watch the next poll. Memphis hosts VCU on Saturday, and Iowa State hosts Southern Miss on Friday.
