The Cowboys blow a 14-point fourth-quarter lead and lose to Arizona again

  • The Dallas Cowboys had the best defensive game of their season for about 44 minutes on Sunday. Then they lost 33-30 in overtime to an Arizona team that had benched its starting quarterback.

Dak Prescott's 5-yard touchdown run with 14:20 left made it 24-10. Dallas never trailed again until Chad Ryland's 42-yard field goal with 2:53 left in overtime. In between, the Cowboys gave up 23 points, most of them to Gardner Minshew, who came on in the third quarter after Jacoby Brissett went 10 of 23. Minshew finished 17 of 23 for 188 yards and three touchdowns.

  • The last minute of regulation is the part Dallas will hear about all week. Up 30-24 after Brandon Aubrey's 41-yard field goal, the Cowboys let Arizona go 80 yards in eight plays starting with 1:05 left. Minshew hit Michael Wilson for 14 yards with 6 seconds to go. Ryland, who had made 58 straight extra points, pushed the go-ahead kick wide left, and Dallas got a reprieve it did nothing with. The Cowboys went three-and-out with the first chance to win in overtime, according to the AP recap on ESPN.

  • The offense was the bigger problem all day. Dallas finished with 261 total yards to Arizona's 467. Javonte Williams needed 24 carries to get 56 yards, Prescott was sacked four times, and CeeDee Lamb caught seven passes for 58 yards. The Cowboys' first touchdown was a fumble recovery in the end zone by James Mitchell. They also lost tight end Jake Ferguson to an ankle injury in the first quarter and rookie safety Caleb Downs to a concussion in the second half.

Meanwhile, one running back beat them. With rookie Jeremiyah Love out again with an ankle injury and Bam Knight concussed, Tyler Allgeier was all Arizona had left. He ran for 147 yards on 11 carries, including a 63-yard touchdown, and caught a 5-yard score. All but 7 of his 191 scrimmage yards came after halftime.

Arizona has now beaten Dallas five straight times and is 5-0 at AT&T Stadium since it opened in 2009. Both teams are 3-5, and the Cowboys go to Indianapolis next Sunday.
